Obaachan told me a couple of times about how she moved into the Yamada home after she was married, and her mother-in-law, Ai Shibata, taught her everything; how to do things around the house, etc. (Something tells me she already knew a lot of that, though.)

ReplyDeleteWhen he was a little boy, he more than once jumped from the top of the stairs to the bottom at his Aunt's house (that owned a restaurant in Kyoto / married to Akira's older brother) and scared her to death -- she said she was so afraid he would hurt himself, and Obaachan would never forgive her...
ReplyDeleteDaddy's father (Akira)had left before Daddy was born...leaving Daddy and Obaachan to live at the Yamada family home. Akira's mother and sisters were quite cruel to Obaachan, and worked her hard, even during her pregnancy. In the end, though, she took the "ijiwaru" and kept her head high, worked hard and over the years won her mother-in-law's heart. On her death bed Akira's mother told Obaachan that Akira was not worthy to have Obaachan as a wife, and if she wanted a divorce (UNHEARD OF IN THOSE DAYS!!!) she would support her. Akira's mother told Obaachan that she was a better daughter than her own daughters!

I thought all or half of my family were passed.
My grandparents were both born in the 1900s.
My generation goes back to Japan by 1st.
But I had some family I'm possibly believing come to states,
Around 1940s to 1970s. You'll really resemble my family member's.

DeleteAs far as I know we don't have any relatives in Sendai or Iwate. There are a lot of Yamadas in Japan =). Good luck finding more of your family!
